Attention EE Domain Users
Starting
5th July 2008, 14:30pm Bilkent University EE domain e-mail services
will be switched to a new server.
This new
server will require changes in the settings of e-mail client programs like Outlook, Thunderbird, etc.
What are these changes?
- Incoming e-mail server (also known as POP3 server) must be set to: imap.bilkent.edu.tr (note that there is no "ee" domain indicator in this host name).
- Outgoing e-mail server (also known as SMTP server) must be set to: asmtp.bilkent.edu.tr (note that here is no "ee" here as well)
- All userIDs must be set to full e-mail addresses. That is; if the userID you have been using till now is "jdoe"; you must enter "jdoe@ee.bilkent.edu.tr" into all userID fields of the settings of the program you will be using.
- For outgoing e-mail, "Authenticated SMTP (ASMTP) will be used instead of SMTP; this means you will have to enter a password to send out an email as well. You can set your program to save this password.
- For web based email services (webmail); EE Domain users will need to point their browsers to a new webmail server; namely "newmail.bilkent.edu.tr and type in their FULL E-MAIL ADDRESS as the userID. Passwords will remain the same.
- There will be NO procmail service available because there are no "home" directories for each user on the new mail server. (Regular UNIX accounts on departmental UNIX/LINUX servers will remain as they are; except the .procmailrc files will not be effective.
What shall NOT change?
?
- Your e-mail address will NOT change,
- Your folder structure will not change
- If your EE Domain e-mail address is already forwarded to some other domain/network; you will NOT be effected by these changes.
What
changes are required in the settings of e-mail clients?
Because
of the large number of available e-mail client software in the market
and their different versions; we cannot give an exhaustive list and
exact settings to be made or changed but we believe the screen shots
provided below for some popular e-mail client software will be useful.
The
basic idea is
- setting the e-mail clients' "Authentication required" option
to "Yes" for the outgoing mail server.
- providing a user name in the SMTP server settings
Here
are some screen shots for various software:
What if your
e-mail
client software does not support
Auth-SMTP?
If
your e-mail client does not support the Authenticated SMTP protocol,
you'll have to upgrade your e-mail program. We recommend "Mozilla
Thunderbird" which is a very good opensource e-mail program which you
can
download and use freely. You can
download Thunderbird here.
What if you do
not/cannot make the necessary changes in your e-Mail client software?
You
can switch to Webmail (http://webmail.bilkent.edu.tr)
untill you fix the problem.
Bilkent Webmail)
is already set to authenticated SMTP services, therefore you will not
have to change anything at all.
