Client Authenticated SMTP Settings
To enable
Authenticated SMTP in MS Outlook Express:
- Click "Tools"
in the menu bar,
- Select "Accounts",
- Choose the e-mail account you want to modify,
- Click "Properties"
- Choose the tab "Servers"
- Modify the "Outgoing Mail (SMTP)"
field by entering your
Auth-SMTP server (see notes below)
- Check the option which reads "My
server requires authentication"
- Click "Settings"
- Check "Log on using"
option
- Fill in your full email address into "Account
name"
- DO NOT enter your password (serious security hazard)
- DO NOT check "Remember password" (serious security hazard)
- Uncheck "Log on using Secure
Password Authentication". (See
note below on TLS)
- Click "OK" and finish setup
FEN users: (e-mail
address like xyz@fen.bilkent.edu.tr)
- Type in asmtp.bilkent.edu.tr
as the SMTP Server Name.
- Type in your full e-mail address (jdoe@fen.bilkent.edu.tr)
You might want
to enable TLS
(Transport Layer Security) by selecting "TLS,
if available" or "TLS", but you might
encounter
problems with security certificates; or at least will have to accept
certificates every now and then. TLS enables encrypted exchange of
information with the SMTP server during password authentication and
mail delivery.
